3 Ms of SEO: Common Myths, Misnomers, and Misunderstandings, of SEO

  • "SEO = Front Page". While this is certainly a nice result, it is not the goal of SEO. SEO's goal is to bring your site more qualified traffic, which, in turn, means leads for your business. Remember, it is better to focus your time, energy, and money, on getting multiple good results, as opposed to 1 or 2 front page results. Doing so will bring you a more diverse range of qualified traffic, and give your site more a diverse relevancy to search engines.

  • "SEO is all about Keywords". Absolutely not. SEO, without a website restructuring (e.g., keyword optimization) is like fairy dust: a bucket of junk that isn't going to do you much good. Of course, optimizing your keywords will contribute to your sites rankings, but in order to get the full effects of a properly optimized website, you will usually need to have your site restructured from the ground up, by someone who understands how the search engines crawl and index websites, to ensure that more pages in your site are given exposure.

  • "I want an seo company that can promise front page results". Well, no, you don't. First, and foremost, for the reasons mentioned above, front page is not the main goal. Secondly, there are so many variables of SEO that are outside your control, and outside the control of the SEO company, that make it nearly impossible to determine with certainty where you are going to end up in search results. Most of the time, if an SEO firm promises front page, they are merely telling you what you want to hear in order to secure your project based on a promise that they should not be making. Due to all of the outside influences, such as how much your competitors are spending on SEO, what users are doing, how competitive the particular field is which you are trying to rank for, etc, there is no way to guarantee the results. So then, why is it that WE have guaranteed front page results? Well, once you become so good at something, you can, within reason, expect a certain result, due to your past performance.

  • "I need to buy inbound links". NO! Buying links is defrauding the natural / organic search results, and the search engines takes this VERY seriously. If you are suspected of buying links to your website, the search engines will drop your site from their index entirely. This means that you no longer exist to the rest of the world. This is "internet death". DO NOT hire a seo company that offers to buy you links, and be wary of any seo firm promises get you inbound links, as they could very well be buying them.

  • "I need an SEO firm that will list me with hundreds of search engines". No, you don't. First off, there are only about 10 legitimate search engines left (we maintain a list of them, of course), and most of those engines all report to google anyway. Furthermore, as long as you have at least 1 link coming into your website, the search engines will find you and crawl you. If your website is not new, then you've already been crawled before, so the search engines already know about you, and have a schedule for how often they will crawl you. Any SEO company that says they will list you with (tens, hundreds, thousands) of search engines is outright lying (this happens very often).

  • "I need an SEO company that will list me in all of the directories". No, you don't. Directories are dead. They are not updated fast enough, are not accurate enough, and are not inclusive enough for the search engines to consider as a primary source of information any more. Now days, your WEBSITE is their primary source. Directories also cost money, and many SEO firms say they will list you in (tens, hundreds, thousands) of directories as a part of their service. Do you think they are really paying that money out of their own pocket? Don't buy it. Lastly, most directories can take months, even years, to get into, unless you pay them a nice fee for "faster consideration", and even to bypass their editorial review process. As a result, directories are considered "corruptible" and not reliable sources of definitive information --even Dmoz is falling into nothing from this.

  • "I need an seo company that has been doing this for years". Well, that's not a bad idea, but be wary of anyone who claims to have been doing this for more than 8 years, as 8 years ago, seo just wasn't an issue, and virtually did not exist. Instead of checking up on how long an seo firm has been at it, try checking up on their performance record instead. Think about mathematics: some people try for years, and just don't get it; some people are naturals. The same applies to any field of study --even SEO.

  • "Anyone can learn SEO, any SEO firm should work". Again, check their performance record. SEO seems intuitive when you first start exploring it, but then it goes much deeper into a realm of logic and analysis that most people have a hard time dealing with and understanding. As with any field of study, you've got perpetual amateurs, mediocres, and professional seo companies. As the subject of study grows in complexity, its number of students wane off quickly. In the end, there are very very few "experts". If you want the best, then "joe bob" isn't going to work, even if he does have an attractive price, or promises great things. Conversely, just because you pay a stiff price, does not mean that you get a good seo company. The proof is in the results. Even if you are the first client of the seo firm in question (which they will probably never tell you), then you need to see some of THEIR OWN websites that they've practiced on, and had good results with.
